For our first Zinfandel since the 1999 vintage, we sourced Zinfandel grapes from a small vineyard on Ink Grade, just north of Angwin, where the evenings tend to be warmer than the valley floor, but cooler during the days due to the elevation. This creates a slower maturation cycle, allowing grapes to ripen evenly with the tannins and retain natural acidity. The grapes were sorted and fermented on the skins for ten days with pumpovers performed twice daily. After fermentation, the wine was gently pressed, racked and moved to 75% French and 25% American oak for 18 months of aging. The final blend includes Syrah sourced from a vineyard south of Yountville for added color and depth.
This wine is the perfect back yard barbeque choice this summer. Pair with barbequed chicken and ribs, grilled steak tacos with avocado salsa or grilled Portobello mushrooms with tarragon butter. Also a great choice with Zinfandel braised beef short ribs, roast pork tenderloin, baked Rigatoni with spicy sausage, rack of lamb with a mustard and rosemary crust, beef chili or seafood gumbo.
